Early Morning Rain & Storms = Afternoon/Evening Heat & Humidity

Slow moving rain is here with a few thunderstorms about to crawl through both our counties as I write this after 6 AM.

The Bad News: Raining and Storming this Morning

Lightning, obviously, is bad news. It’s cloud to ground and frequent in Ashland City and likely to move into Nashville and the most populated area in Middle Tennessee as you’re reading this. Probably many of you are reading this and it’s already happened, you slept through it, congrats! read more

Wherein I Get a Little Too Excited for Today’s Humidity Relief

Waking up to a dewpoint of 71° is what you sign up for in Atlanta or B’ham or Florida or Gulfport Mississippi (gooooo mighty Admirals!) but here in Nashville that’s not cool.  Upper 60°s dewpoints are fine, that was part of the contract we signed when we moved here, but I draw the line at 70°. I looked outside this morning and sweat formed on half my eyelashes and no one thought that was attractive. read more

Remembering Army Spc. Jason K. Edens | Alberto Moves Closer

Memorial Day isn’t Veterans Day. Memorial Day remembers those who died in defense of our country.

Alongside many of you I paused my Saturday on a warm day in 2012 to stand along Columbia Avenue in Franklin as the processional of Army Spc. Jason K. Edens passed by. I didn’t know him or his wife or his family and I still don’t know his family. But I decided as long as I have an audience – and I don’t hear from his family otherwise – that he would be the soldier we remember on Memorial Day. read more

More Storms Possible Tomorrow

This afternoon, a severe thunderstorm developed in Maury County. By late afternoon, rain cooled air from that thunderstorm raced north and set off severe thunderstorms in Williamson then Davidson Counties. Hardest hit was Belle Meade and surrounding communities. High winds brought down trees and power was lost. We got several reports of small hail. Torrential rains caused localized flooding. read more

It’s “We Don’t Know Exactly When or Where but It May Rain This Afternoon” Season

It’s uncertainty season.

Here’s one reason why ETAs and rain/no rain questions about your outdoor event are very difficult to answer with confidence.

Remember in elementary school when you were hopefully taught rain is basically just a tall cloud. The taller the cloud, the more water it has. When it gets tall and big enough, the water it has is too heavy to stay suspended in the cloud, so the water falls. That’s rain. read more

Decisions!

Future prediction is hard.

This week we’re at our outdoorsiest…during what’s statistically the wettest week of the year, mid-May.

Will it rain [insert location, date, time] because I have [plants to water, graduation ceremony, a game, going out with friends and thinking about a white top, it’s field day, etc] and I have to decide what to do? read more
