Hi, David here.
I am leaving Nashville Severe Weather.
No scandal, no internal discord, no problems, we all good fam.
I’m emotionally and mentally exhausted from 15 years of running NSWX from the margins of my free time.
You care that NSWX cooks during storms, and let me tell you, my leaving won’t change that at all.
I’d like for those of you who care to know I’m well and I’ll be fine. NSWX was 15 years making a personal hobby an accidental public service. We have walked alone together through some bad storms. My part in all this came from the margins of my free time and at the expense of sleep, family, vacations, my beer league hockey teams, friends, families: pretty much any margin in my day went to weather, work always came first (I’m a practicing attorney, btw). I have tweeted from hockey rinks (playing and watching), my bed, the bonus room, the kids room, my office, my home office, from y’all’s kitchen tables or gym, from (my) shower (many times), a tarmac, my uncle’s Green Bay basement, etc etc etc, the radar and data was always (ALWAYS) by my side whether awake or asleep, watching me run myself ragged to be sure the weather lighthouse is turned on and the beam is pointing in the right direction.
It’s quite a thing for the storms to control your life.
I’m blessed with the luxury to admit I’ve run out of emotional fuel and mental energy to keep this pace going, especially since the 2020 tornado that killed Mike and Albree, then the derecho, then Waverly. It all worked in me a trauma, which caused hypervigilance, which caused burnout.
For years, I’ve tried to find ways to stay—boundaries, time off, therapy—but nothing has been enough. I admit I lack limitless energy. My race has been run.
If you know me personally, please don’t ask me about the weather. The only thing I’m hanging onto is my (alert! Immabout to big time you) board position with the National Weather Association Foundation which helps meteorology students and weather education in general.
Thank you for tolerating the GIFs, jokes, art unappreciated in its own time (Louvre the Dry Air Monster), invented words and phrases, Dense Dog Advisories, Crazy Ivans, NED, all that stuff. We suffered rare, raw moments of shock and sadness together.
NSWX is in good hands. I’ll be reading and watching along with you. Maybe occasionally trolling them for amusement or expressing my unpopular Larry Jones, wet popcorn, anti-beaches (the sandy thing near waves, not the movie) opinions.
You were, you are, and you will remain: well loved by these NSWX strangers. Please be nice to them. They work hard. Their families sacrifice a piece of themselves to run this. You are worth it.

“My energy level was endless but now it’s not. I can’t do it on three wheels, I don’t want to be a passenger. My manager skills are based on energy and relationships. I am who I am and where I am because of how I am. I cannot be that anymore.” Jurgen Klopp, legendary manager of Liverpool Football Club, explaining why he left.
Arne Slot replaced Klopp. Liverpool won the league the following year.
YNWA David, thank you so so so much!!
We so appreciate every single thing you have done for the whole region these years. Go rest and be with your family and friends. You have taught us all so well.
David, sad to hear of your departure but applaud you for your efforts over the years. NSWX has been and will continue to be my go-to for all things weather. You created such an amazing option for those of us navigating the ever changing weather patterns that we are experiencing and helped us understand why things were happening. I am grateful, we are grateful….THANK YOU!!
David, I will miss hearing you on the YouTube broadcasts! Thanks so much for everything you’ve done for the community! As an attorney myself, I truly can’t imagine how you’ve done this for so long! Enjoy your free time!
Totally understand – your dedication has been amazing. Take care of yourself so you can take care of the things that matter most – your family!
Thank you for giving this community all that energy all those years. What a gift to Nashville and surrounding areas. I appreciated the facts delivered with some humor!
Thank you for all you have done. We adore this group and are thankful for their service!
Thank you! You’ve taught so many readers and watchers about the weather. Good luck on your future journeys.
Thanks for your service, David.
So thankful for NSWX. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for starting this and for all the years and time you’ve poured into it. Countless people are better aware and informed thanks to you.
You have gotten us through some times man and we appreciate all you’ve taught us. My storm anxiety is now manageable because of NSWX! Good luck and enjoy this next chapter of your life!
Did not expect to cry reading that. Our family lost our home in 2020 and, “east Nashville, get to your safe space” could be the most important words of our lives. Thank you. A million thank yous. And long live Nashville Sever Weather.
Thanks David for your service. Your voice has gotten me through plenty of sleepless nights. I will always appreciate your calmness in stressful situations. Good luck with the next chapter of your life!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, David! Thank you for launching your passion project that “accidentally” became a crucial public service that keeps my family and our city safe and informed. While it doesn’t balance out the sacrifices you have made, please know they have not been in vain. We are so grateful! Go rest… and I hope your peace and equilibrium return quickly in this new season. The impact you’ve made in our community and families’ lives will continue to be felt for many, many years to come.
Thank you David, you all have made me feel safe and informed over the years with your posts, tweets, and streams. I’m not sure I could ever convey how much this website means to me but I credit you and the team for healing my storm anxiety with information and science. You all deserve so much recognition and celebration from our area. Enjoy your new free time, I hope it gives you the peace you are looking for.
