Light Freezing Rain Possible Sunday Morning N of I-40, Little to No Accumulation of Snow on Monday

Saturday looks dry, but cold. High temperatures may barely make it to 40°. Brrrr, but it’ll be even colder next week – this is just a little preview.

Now onto Sunday, we are still expecting a possible mix of precipitation, but right now impacts look very minimal to none.

Rain is expected to begin Sunday morning, and depending on what the temperature at the surface is – some locations could experience light freezing rain.

Freezing rain will appear as just normal rain, but if temperatures at the surface are at/below freezing, it then freezes on contact with the ground. Think of it like the glazing on a donut.

Thankfully, chances here of seeing any substantial icing are very low.

Your chances of seeing a glazing of ice (0.01″ or greater) goes up the further north you go, especially north of I-40, although the chances are still relatively low. Chances for Metro Nashville and points N are only 30-40%. Chances in WillCo? Less than 20%.

Granted, it does not take much ice to cause minor travel problems. If surface temperatures are at/below freezing Sunday morning, some roads could be slick, especially bridges and overpasses.

Good news is temperatures are expected to rise above freezing at the latest 10a on Sunday, melting any ice that happens to accumulate.

The Euro model (below) gives its best guess at how Sunday/Monday unfolds.

  • Light freezing rain possible Sunday morning, especially north of I-40.
  • Quickly switching to all rain thru Sunday night.
  • Flurries possible Monday morning thru the afternoon, with little to no accumulation expected.

This could change, but this is what is most likely as of right now. Thankfully, all of the major impacts are expected to stay well to our north.

Regardless of any winter weather, temperatures next week will be the coldest so far this winter.

Highs not expected to get above freezing much after Monday, with lows dipping down into the teens.

Now is the time to start thinking about how to winterize your home. Don’t forget the 4 P’sPipes, Plants, Pets and People.

Winterize your home. Inspect your chimney. Caulk and weather strip doors/windows. Insulate exposed pipes. Insulate your attic. Clean out gutters. Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors (with battery backups). Gather supplies.

Still looking at late next week for another potential system, but models are still all over the place with that. Nothing conclusive right now. More on that after this first system gets thru here.
