We certainly have plenty of headlines to talk about.

Before the storms, it’ll be a hot one. Our Heat Advisory continues thru 8p. High temperatures will soar into the mid 90s, paired with dewpoints in the mid 70s = heat index values in the 105 – 110° range. Please take precautions against the heat if you have to be outside for long periods of time, including staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks. Heat illness can happen to anyone.

Onto the severe and flooding potential.

We are still expecting a line of storms to push S through Kentucky into Middle TN, bringing the threat for strong to severe storms along with the potential for isolated flash flooding.

The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked our area with the following probabilities of ‘x’ within 25 miles:

• 15% chance of damaging straight-line winds (58mph+)
• 5% chance of severe hail (1″+)
• while we are not included in any tornado probabilities, I wouldn’t say our chance is zero, but it’s close to zero

Timing wise, models still suggest this line moves in sometime after dinner. The best guess ETA range I could give right now would be 7-11p. Right now, I’d lean towards the back half of that range, but we’ll have to look at trends and observations throughout the day to get a better idea.

Here’s a look at what the HRRR model thinks. Remember, models are guidance – not gospel.

In addition to the severe weather threat, we’ll also have to keep an eye out for the flash flooding threat. Given all the rain we’ve got recently, it won’t take much to cause some issues. Our atmosphere will be loaded with moisture, and this line of storms will certainly have the potential to put down too much rain. For that reason, we have a Flood Watch in effect thru Wednesday morning.

Those that live in flood-prone areas near creeks and streams should keep a close eye on things and be ready to take action, just in case. If you plan on being out late tonight driving, be sure to pay extra close attention, it’s a lot harder to see water over the road in the dark – and there’s no telling how deep it is. Turn around, don’t drown.

Today will be a good stay to stay connected. Changes to the forecast are certainly possible throughout the day, especially as we can start tracking the line. Depending on when the line comes thru, it could be after some folks are already asleep. In that case, be sure to have a way to receive warnings, severe or flooding. Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone, wake-me-up app, weather radio – all good ways. Also, not a bad idea to charge your devices in that case that you do lose power.

We finally get a few dry days put together starting Wednesday, continuing thru Friday. Our reward is also high temperatures that stay in the 80s, certainly not “cool” – but I’m sure we can agree that a break from the 90s will be nice. Low rain chances return Saturday.
