A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for both counties until noon Thursday.
Timing
8 AM to 10 PM: rain starting to mix with some sleet.
10 PM to 1 AM: freezing rain and sleet — roads quickly turning hazardous.
1 AM to 6 AM: sleet mixing with snow, accumulation ramping up, travel not recommended.
6 AM to Noon: snow. Snowdome is in trouble.
How Much
Anywhere from 1″ to 3″. I’d say about 2″ of sleet and snow, with a thin layer of ice underneath. Maybe 3″ further N of 40. This will depend on the exact mixture of snow vs sleet. Snow accumulates 3x more than sleet. Sleet accumulation is especially punishing to travel.
Travel Conditions?
Roads will be increasingly hazardous through the early morning hours. Sunshine isn’t expected tomorrow, and with temps below freezing through Friday afternoon, roads aren’t expected to improve much. Interstates and highways/heavily trafficked roads will clear first. We can’t speculate on how fast TDOT can get them cleared, or whether it’s OK for you to make it to the Preds game. We will not certify any travel tomorrow to be “safe.”
Meaningful melting won’t occur until Saturday afternoon.
